A Philosophical Exploration of the Idea of the Self.

By: Pablo Baker

Philosophy and psychology have the same fields of investigation – the self. The self is the integral part of our personality, which thinks and decides during our life. The mind is a natural machine which consists of many parts. Our mind has a lot of different wishes, feelings, and emotions. The self gives the mind the idea which the mind uses in a centralized way. The mind is able to understand its wishes and instincts. So, the mind makes the self to mix all the various desires and emotions into a single set. For instance, a part of a person desires something but another part dislikes that thing. So, the mind should synthesize them and decide what a preferable one is.
Humanity uses the self to interact with people. Understanding humans, we perceive them as separate persons with their own selves.
Wisdom also has an impact on men’s idea of the self. A child and a grown up thinks about themselves in future in different ways. We become older and acquire experience, and as a result we should pay the consequences of our life choices. Then we learn to behave better.
Death also strongly affects the way we understand the self by defining the limits for its existence.
More often, the human death comes quickly and marks a main turning-point where the creature entirely loses consciousness. The exclusive information and thoughts kept in the human’s mind are lost. So we can think that the death is the very end of the self or may be it is the transformation of the self.
Finally, the mind as well as the society believes the self to be the way to interact with people. Wisdom makes us to believe the self to be more than only a momentary being. Try to define the self yourself.
