Group Policy : Preventing Installation with policies, and software alternatives

By: Bash Software

A problem that many businesses, schools, and parents have is unwanted software being installed on their computer(s). Whether it's employees or students installing file sharing programs and games, or children installing what they believe to be harmless software, that is really loaded with spyware and adware, the security and stability of the computer(s) can be comprimised.

Group Policy Editor attempts to solve this problem, and can be found on XP Professional system by running gpedit.msc as an administrator. From within the policy editor, you can set user- and computer-level policies.

Group Policies can prevent some programs from being installed, but many can slip by if, for example, they can be installed outside of protected folders, such as Program Files, or if they use a custom setup engine to unpack the files. Group Policy Editor is also cumbersome to use, and cannot be fine tuned or quickly disabled.

Install-Block is the ideal solution and can not only block users from adding or removing software, but can also restrict access to existing programs or Windows tools.

Install-Block prompts for a password whenever a setup program or other black-listed program attempts to run. This makes it impossible for people to utilize those, while also making it easy for a program administrator to continue with little interruption.

Install-Block is trusted by businesses large and small, colleges, government offices, hospitals, and anyone who wants a powerful, customizable solution to the problem of unwanted software.
