Nine Key Tips for A Successful Job Interview

By: Phoenix Delray

Research Find out as much as you can about the company you intend to work for. This includes finding out as much detail as possible about the duties of the position that you are applying for, since these can sometimes vary by company.

Always bring several copies of your resume with you, even if the HR director or prospective employer does not tell you to do so. It goes without saying that the resume you bring must be well written.

Make eye contact with the person who is interviewing you. This shows not only that you have confidence, but also, that you are interested in what they are telling you.

Dress professionally. Even if the workplace is casual, you are there to make a lasting impression, and your job interview outfit needs to reflect that. The corporate dress code is becoming more and more lenient, but for interview purposes, you cannot go wrong with a simple pair of dress pants and a button down shirt. Women should wear a blouse and dress pants or a dark colored skirt that covers, rather than skims the knee when standing.

Try to answer interview questions in sixty seconds or less. This does not mean that you have to resort to monosyllabic yes or no answers, just that you should keep in mind that long answers can cause prospective employers minds to wander, and cause you to lose track of the actual question being asked.

Listen. Pay careful attention to the questions being asked, before you respond to them. If you need clarification, do not hesitate to ask for it. Asking an interviewer to repeat a question is not a sign that you were not paying attention. Common sense dictates that it is always better to know exactly what you are being asked before you attempt to answer someone.

Prepare to answer typical job interview questions, such as where do you see yourself in ten years, who has been your biggest professional influence, describing your greatest strengths/weaknesses, etc.

Ask some questions of your own. This will show that you are proactive, and interested in the company. Often, asking questions about the history of the company, further details about the position that you are interested in, and similar types of questions can be the deciding factor in determining whether the company is a good fit for you.

Send a Thank You note at no more than 2 days after the interview. Traditionally, this is done via snail mail, but nowadays, email thank you letters are generally considered acceptable as well.
